Hamsa

The hamsa — the open palm with an eye at its centre, carried as a protective sign across the Middle East and North Africa for centuries. Our drawing of it runs across twenty-three pieces, from shirts and bra tops to bags and wallets.

A hand, an eye, and a very long history

The hamsa appears in Jewish, Muslim and Christian practice, usually against the evil eye. Nobody owns it and everybody uses it, which is unusual for a symbol this old. We drew ours rather than copying any one regional style.

Symmetry does the work

The palm is symmetrical by nature, so it tiles cleanly without forcing. Repeated across fabric it reads as a field of eyes long before you register the hands.

What it comes on

Messenger bags, padded strap drawstring backpacks, women's wallets, bra tops, tops in black and grey, and button up shirts in black and white.
